People talk about “falling” into the adult industry all the time, as though it’s easy to do. As though it’s just right there waiting to grab anyone who steps off the path for minute. I found out that getting into this world is very difficult. I had to fight and struggle for a few years before I finally broke my way into making money off “selling” myself. Or maybe it’s just my usual method of doing everything the hard way.

Two Classic Movies about the Classic Career

Butterfield 8 and Klute are interesting parallel movies. They both won Oscars for their leadings ladies, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda. Both films have a bit of a reputation for focusing on call-girls. Both films star kind-of-clunky men as the romantic leads. Each movie takes a different view of sexually liberated women.

I’d come across knowing references to both movies since childhood, which fueled my curiosity about certain things. Some of the references were in the oddest places, like a magazine article on lipstick (featuring that famous shot from Butterfield 8), or hair (featuring that shot of Jane Fonda striding down the sidewalk). I finally got to see both movies this summer.

The Way of the Courtesan

I’ve participated on a particular public discussion forum way more than has been necessary. It’s called the HDH (High Dollor Hotties) forum and concerns courtesans, paid companions, and those who simply charge higher-than-normal rates for their time. Scrolling through the forum one will read page after page of what defines a “courtesan”, which nearly everyone seems to feel is the pinnacle of the “provider” spectrum.

When I worked, I aspired to be as courtesan-like as possible, using my own definitions, biases and prejudices. I know I didn’t hit the mark all the time. If I did, I would’ve achieved my goal. Every escort uses her own definition of what a courtesan is, whether self-proclaimed or simply jumping into a discussion. And then we have to contend with the long history of courtesans, which vary from country to country and century to century. The word “courtesan” has been used to describe everything from a modern-day Nevada brothel employee to a handful of rarified newsmakers and trendsetters in 19th century France and England. With such a wide range of concepts to choose from; what really is a courtesan?

On My Retirement Part I

It’s nearly the one-year anniversary of my retirement. I’m not planning a celebration of any sort; it is simply a small marker in my life, a time for reflection.

Many people, men and women, have asked why I retired. Most escorts retire because of a relationship. Some retire because they’ve saved enough money, achieved whatever goal they set, or landed their dream job. I was one of the ones who retired because of a relationship.
